Use Siri to start apps or change settings

To allow applications to communicate with each other, Apple makes use of so called “URL-Schemes“.

This is a quite nice trick. Who’s interested in getting deeper information should visit the english Wikipedia.

Shortly summarized:

By adjusting the links accordingly, one can start certain applications or execute certain commands.

If you e.g. have installed the Twitter-App, the link twitter:// starts the application, modifying it to twitter://messages directly jumps into the DMs.

Maybe not that spectacular yet, but in connection with Siri this fact can be very timesaving.

By making use of it you can’t only start certain applications but also “jump” to certain pages in the Settings App.

This should be shown with “Bluetooth” as an example:

  • Create a new contact, e.g. with “Bluetooth” as a name. Important: choose the First Name field
  • in the URL field add the following: prefs:root=General&path=Bluetooth

From now on you can easily make use of Siri to activate and deactivate Bluetooth. Just launch Siri and say “Show Bluetooth”. A fast click at the link takes you directly to the switch in the Settings.

URL-Schemes offer various possibilities, e.g. starting of Apps, other settings and so on.

An overview of URL-Schemes can be found here.

What possibilities did you find? Questions? See you in the comments!
